This is Mallory, isn't she lovely? You can see the rest of her pictures
here.
Doing makeup for photographs is a little different than every day makeup. Some things look great in person but don't translate well in pictures. Here are a few makeup tips to help you look your best when you are photographed:
1. Use matte colors - Although shimmer can look great when applied properly, if you are a little unsure about what to do, it's always safe to go with matte colors. Matte makeup won't reflect light, making it easy to apply and easy to photograph.
2.
Fill in your brows - Even if you don't fill in your brows on a daily basis, fill them in for your pictures. Your eyes and face will look so much more complete if your brows are looking polished. This especially goes for blondes. Blonde eyebrows will disappear in photographs.
3.
Makeup will photograph 2 shades lighter - In the picture above, Mallory's lip stick color was a seriously BRIGHT orange, but you would never guess it by look at the picture. Makeup doesn't translate as vibrant in photographs. I recommend doing your blush, eyes and lip color a little more vibrant than you normally would.
4.
Use powder - Even if your makeup is applied perfectly, if you look shiny in your pictures it can ruin your whole look. Once your makeup is complete, use a finishing or setting powder to make everything more matte. I recommend even taking some powder with you (or oil blotting sheets), especially if it's a warm day.
5.
Wear false lashes - I have never had a bride who didn't like wearing false lashes, even if they were hesitant about them at first. 95% of the people in my
portfolio are wearing false lashes, and they make all the difference! Once again, Mallory's false lashes were sooo long, but in the pictures they look perfectly proportionate. If you want something more natural, buy the individual lashes and just put a few on the outer corners.
6. Apply your makeup in natural light - When you put on your makeup, sit by a window or in a room with a lot of natural light. This will give you the best idea of what your makeup really looks like, and how it will look in the pictures.
7. Wax - makeup does not adhere well to peach fuzz. Whatever you normally wax on your face, wax it before your pictures. I suggest waxing at least 48 hours before your pictures to give enough time for any redness and swelling to go down.
8.
Wear lip gloss- I, myself, never wear lip gloss. I am a chapstick girl through and through. But when it comes to photos, lip gloss is a must. I consider my lips on the smaller side, so wearing lip gloss really helps them look full and plump in pictures.
9.
Wear black mascara - Some people think black is too harsh for their skin tone, but I promise that when it comes to pictures, black looks good on everyone. Wearing black mascara will bring out your eyes a lot more than brown will.
Thank you so much for these tips! I never know what to do for photos--we did some family photos last summer and I just did my regular, everyday makeup, and I look completely naked-faced in the pictures. Not very flattering, and I've never liked those pictures at all :-( This is great to know for next time!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna share this on my Facebook page! :)
ReplyDeleteI already had a clue about some of things out of trial and error but the matte colors.. I didn't know! It'll make future shoots easier if there's no MUA available.
ReplyDeletethese are great tips - thank you! -jen
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for these great tips. Im going to show my sister this post for tips next time i take her picture.
ReplyDeletegreat tips!
ReplyDeleteThese are great! Do you have any suggestions about specific brands of primers, foundations, eyelashes, etc? That would be REALLY helpful!
ReplyDeleteI use mostly MAC. Their paint pot Painterly is what I use for eye shadow primer, and I really like their clear setting powder too. I get my lashes from Sally's, the Ardell ones. There are a lot to choose from, but I like the Demi Wispies for brides.
Deletethese are great tips, thank you. But what I really want to know is how she did her hair.....
ReplyDeleteI'm your newest follower! Love these tips...need them for the blog's Look of the Days.
ReplyDeleteWow she looks gorgeous! Can you tell me what eye makeup you used on her to achieve this look?
ReplyDeleteI use all MAC eye makeup products. I started with Paint Pot - Painterly on the lid, then the eyeshadow Bone with Brown Down in the crease, then used the eyeliner fluid line - black tracks.
DeleteWhat type of eyelashes is she wearing?
ReplyDeleteIf I remember right they were the Ardell 119 fashion lashes
DeleteThank you! i love your blog! my new fav thing to look at daily. =)
DeleteGreat tips! you are awesome!
ReplyDeleteThese are great types. Love those eyelashes that she is wearing. I just got engaged so we are about to take pictures so this is so helpful. I just became a new follower to your blog. I found this post via Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of tips about putting on extra makeup for photos, and I can understand why. It's fine for just photo shoots, but I'm concerned about how it will look in real life. Her makeup looks great in the photos, but I'm not sure how I would feel about wearing bright lip stick (or more vibrant cheeks, eye shadow, etc) on my wedding day. I don't wear much makeup myself. I want to look good in the pictures without feeling like I look like a clown on my wedding day. Do you know what I mean? Is there a happy medium?
ReplyDeleteYes there is a happy medium, it all just comes down to what you feel comfortable with. I would say do more vibrant makeup for bridal pictures, and on your wedding day tone it down a little. If you don't wear a lot of makeup normally, just do at least some for your wedding day. If you fill in your brows, wear a natural lip color, and even out your skin a little with foundation, that will be good enough for pictures.
DeleteI am totally on board for the lip gloss, but in our engagement photo shoot we were always having to kiss, which messes up your lip gloss and reapplying a million times isn't practical. Plus, for those of us who are a little older, the lip gloss causes the color to run into our vertical lip lines (even with reverse lip liner).
ReplyDeleteAny ideas for keeping the shiny plump look without running into those issues?
Thank you, these are great makeup tips! Do you think you can give a simple tutorial on how to achieve her hair do? it looks both sophisticated and fun.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
All right, I had to come back and thank you again for these great tips! I commented right after you posted this that we had done family photos last summer and I HATED how they came out--I just wore my regular everyday makeup and honestly looked like a man in the pictures. Sad, but true. We had pictures taken again over the weekend and I followed your tips (all but wearing false lashes--I forgot about that and didn't buy any in time, but I put on a TON of mascara to try and make up for it) and we just got some proofs back and they look amazing! I actually feel like I look pretty and feminine in the photos without being overdone (it felt overdone in real life, but you were right, it's so toned down in the photos, so it looks just right). So thank you, thank you, thank you for this advice! You saved my family pics ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the tips & explanations! Just went to MAC yesterday to get makeup for my wedding. They put what I thought was SO much makeup on me, plus fake lashes, but it all looked really nice when we took iPhone pics!

Awesome tips! Thanks. It makes sense you would have to go bolder in terms of make up to account for the camera. What lip stick is she wearing btw?
ReplyDeleteDo you have any recommendations for powder? I usually use Bare Minerals makeup, but not the mineral veil because I think it makes me look even shinier. I get very shiny on my forehead and nose. I am in a wedding in September and would like to try out finishing powders before her big day. Thoughts on primers?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite finishing powder is the MAC prep+prime translucent finishing powder. I love it!
DeleteLook at it go... straight to my bookmarks ;) !
ReplyDeleteLove the tips here! Question: Do you have any suggestions for applying liquid eye liner? I can always get my right eye applied nice and evenly (I'm right handed), but the left eye ends-up looking like a four year old did it. The liner is uneven, not neat at all. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm a new MUA in the making and the best thing I can tell you is to PRACTICE and try to not think about it so much while you are doing it. I have the same problem and my hand gets a little shakey when I try to do eyeliner, I think due to getting a little nervous b/c I want it to look perfect...haha. Good luck!
DeleteHi Stephanie! Thank you for the tips!
ReplyDeleteDo you recommend the Mac prep + prime translucent powder for everyone? I am Asian with medium skin tone and have tried bare minerals mineral veil and make up forever finishing powder, but it leaves a white cast on my face especially in pictures. Am I using too much? Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thank you so much!
Great tips!!! really needed them!!

God! your post put the finishing end on my degree of Perfect-makeup-for-pictures :p Superb really :)

Whoa wait, wax my face? People wax their faces? What kind of beauty wagon have I fallen off of, I have never heard of that! Owch, and don't think I want to try either, just getting my brows done makes me cry on the inside- and out.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that I am always too conservative with eyeliner, which (with the help of blonde-ish lashes) makes my eyes always look extremely washed out. Ugh.
Thanks for the heads up on Sally's. Been curious about false eyelashed but was not sure what to try. Thank tons!!!
ReplyDeleteThe eyelashes is perfect!!! I wish I have one teh same as yours also!!.:)
